SWOT Analysis

SWOT stands for:

  • Strengths (Internal)
  • Weaknesses (Internal)
  • Opportunities (External)
  • Threats (External)

This technique can be used to refine ideas, analyse a current situation, evaluate a proposal or solve a problem. SWOT requires consideration from 4 perspectives.

The SWOT analysis groups information into two categories:

  1. Internal factors - the strengths and weaknesses inside the organisation. These may include: personnel, product, finance, price, policy and procedures.
  2. External factors - the opportunities and threats presented by the external environment. These may include: political, economic, social and technological.
