6 Thinking Hats

This method of thinking and analysing was developed by Edward De-Bono; it is used worldwide to consider issues or problems from different angles.

It is a simple tool to use for problem solving, creative thinking and team building.

The “hats” can be put on and taken off so that people are able to channel their thinking into one key area.

The 6 thinking hats are:

  • Red hat: Feelings. What are my feelings about this?
  • Yellow hat: Strengths. What are the good points?
  • Black hat: Weaknesses. What is wrong with this?
  • Green hat: New ideas. What is possible?
  • White hat: Information. What are the facts?
  • Blue hat: Thinking about thinking. What have we achieved so far? What should be the next step?
